Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Wandoor Beach Tragedy: In a tragic incident at Wandoor Beach, a local fisherman was attacked and killed by a crocodile while fishing in the mangrove-rich area. The incident highlighted the risks faced by those living in close proximity to crocodile habitats and the need for heightened awareness and safety measures.

Chidyatapu Wildlife Encounter: At Chidyatapu, a popular tourist destination known for its pristine beaches and lush greenery, a group of hikers had a close encounter with an Andamanese Giant Squirrel.

While the encounter ended without harm, it underscored the importance of respecting wildlife and maintaining a safe distance during wilderness excursions.

Mangrove Creek Incident: In a lesser-known mangrove creek area, a local resident reported a series of encounters with saltwater crocodiles while traversing the waterways in a small boat. Despite efforts to avoid conflict, the close proximity of crocodiles to human settlements posed ongoing challenges for residents relying on the water for transportation and livelihood activities.

Baratang Island Wildlife Encounter: On Baratang Island, home to dense tropical forests and limestone caves, there have been multiple incidents of tourists encountering wild boars and saltwater crocodiles while exploring the natural attractions. These incidents serve as a reminder of the need for caution and respect for wildlife when venturing into remote areas.

These real incidents underscore the complex dynamics of human-wildlife (crocodile) interactions in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, highlighting the importance of implementing effective safety measures, promoting awareness, and fostering coexistence between humans and the diverse wildlife inhabiting the region.
