There has been a recent increase in fraudulent emails masquerading as communications from Indian Cyber Crime, Indian Cyber Squad, or government agencies like BPR & D, IB, and CBI. These deceitful emails often include counterfeit letters with the logos of investigative bodies such as IB, CBI, or BPR&D. They threaten legal action if recipients do not comply and falsely accuse them of involvement in illicit activities like distributing pornographic material or smuggling narcotics. These emails are designed to intimidate individuals and pressure them into meeting the fraudulent demands of the senders. It’s crucial to recognize these emails as scams and avoid engaging with them. The scammers aim to create panic and swindle unsuspecting citizens out of their money. Legitimate law enforcement agencies like IB, CBI, or BPR&D do not initiate unsolicited communications in this manner. Citizens should stay vigilant and report any suspicious emails to the appropriate authorities.
The Andaman and Nicobar Police have issued an advisory to protect citizens:
- Refrain from responding to or engaging with any unexpected emails claiming to be from Cyber Cell India, Intelligence Bureau (IB), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), or Bureau of Police Research & Development (BPR&D).
- Before responding, verify the authenticity of the email by contacting your local Police Station/Cyber Crime Police Station.
- Avoid clicking on links in suspicious emails or posts as they could lead to compromised pages and financial loss.
- Spread awareness among friends, family, and colleagues to prevent more people from falling victim to these scams.
- Report any such incidents on Cybercrime.gov.in portal and follow @CyberDost on Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, Koo, and LinkedIn for safety tips.
