An injured spotted deer was rescued by the Forest officials from the hands of poachers from Shoalbay-10 forest area on June 5, This was possible due to a very prompt action taken by the joint patrolling team consisting of officials of Mobile Squad of South Andaman Division and Dog Squad of Wildlife Division, Port Blair. Based on a tip off about poaching of wild animals at Shoalbay, a plan was laid out and an eight member team consisting of personnel from Mobile Squad of South Andaman Division and a sniffer dog ‘Xano’ accompanied with Dog handlers from Wildlife Division, Port Blair was mobilized and pressed into combing operation in the evening of June 5, 2024.
The team reached Shoalbay-15 and while reaching near the mangrove forest of Shoalbay-10, the dog detected a live barking deertrapped in a snare struggling to free itself from the trap. Later with the help of the sniffer dog they succeeded in detecting approximately 12kg. of venison, 02 Nos. steel Tiffin boxes, a plastic Tiffin box and
manual weighing machine from the said area. Investigation of the case is on to nab the culprits involved in the offence. A Wildlife offence case has been booked under relevant sections of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
The joint patrolling team constituted for the purpose consists of Shri John William, Range Officer, Mobile Squad, Shri Uttam Kumar Mistry, Forest Guard, Shri Keshabananda Ganguly, Forest Guard, Shri Ganesh Sahoo, Mazdoor and two DRMs along with members of Dog Squad namely Shri Vijay Kumar, Forest Guard, and Shri P.
